Village Design Statement
Future - past

The decision of the Treloar Trust to leave Froyle by 2011 may bring about the most significant changes in the structure of the village that any of us have seen. The Parish Council has therefore decided to produce a Village Design Statement to provide information about those factors that need to be taken into account when considering future developments. Such a document will form part of a broader Parish Plan and to achieve this the entire village was consulted.

What is a Village Design Statement?

A Village Design Statement describes the distinctive character of a village and the surrounding countryside. It reflects on the past to give a historical perspective as to how the community has evolved over the centuries. It describes the current environment, including the prevailing architectural styles in evidence and the traditional building materials typically used. It is also an opportunity for local people to influence the planning process within their own area. It is also becomes an integral part of the Parish Plan for the future of the village, and in order to be taken seriously by those it will affect, it must present the views of as many villagers as possible.
Why produce one for Froyle?
The Village Design Statement is intended to ensure that future development and change within our parish are based on an understanding of the area’s history and present character. It will highlight what is special about the buildings and historic landscape characteristics to be found within Froyle’s parish boundaries, as local character could easily be threatened by unsympathetic development. The Froyle Village Design Statement will therefore aim to raise awareness of what is special about the area, and at the same time give residents a say in the future of our village by producing guidance on respecting these qualities. Providing these views now, in this format, is a way of ensuring that these views are heard before, rather than after any major planning decisions are taken that may affect the essential character of Froyle.
Its main aims
  • To give residents an opportunity to describe where they live and what is special about it.
  • To deliver a well-presented and easily understood account of these views.
  • To provide residents, businesses, organisations and potential developers with a single source of information about what factors need to be taken into account when considering developments large or small within the parish.

At the Village Fête & Flower Show last Summer (2009), the children of the village produced their own thoughts on the future of Froyle and what they wanted to see happen. Follow the Froyle Kids link below.
